Exposing your child to languages

Francois Thibaut, founder and director of The Language Workshop for Children, knows how important it is to expose children to different languages at an early age. After almost forty years, his motto is “the younger, the better” and here’s why…

Capturing the Critical Period: Between 7 months and 12-1/2 is when youngsters have the best chance to learn languages like a native because pronunciation processing moves to a  different area of the brain after puberty.   Henry Kissinger, for example, arrived in the US when he was 13 and his brother 11 so that is why Henry will always speak English with a German accent and his brother sounds American.

Boosting Verbal Test Scores. English is rooted in Latin, Spanish, French, and Italian, and studying these languages builds a child’s inventory of root words.  Since SAT I heavily tests root similarities, the more a child studies these languages, the higher his SAT I score.

Learning Before We’re Self-Conscious. Children are not as self-conscious as adults so they are more willing to call out songs and audible responses, two vital ingredients to acquiring language skills.

Planning for The Future. The more skills an adult offers, the more he is worth to an employer.  Start maximizing your child’s future now.

Whole Brain Learning. The left hemisphere governs logic, math, and literal meaning, while the right controls emotion, music and voice melody.  Because so many cognitive and motor tasks are involved in processing and speaking languages both sides of the brain are exercised.

Being able to speak other languages is exponentially more important than ever.  That is why I cannot say enough to encourage you to capture your child’s prime time to start learning languages now.

The Language Workshop for Children has been offering language classes, camps-like enrichment and preschools for children ages 6 months through 9 years old since 1973.  Their Long Island location is 609 Plandome Road in Manhasset, with other locations in Manhattan and New Jersey.  Call The Language Workshop for Children at 800.731.0830 or visit them online at www.languageworkshopforchildren.com.
